There are certain jobs today that inherently have more stress related to them than others, such as first responder positions, military operations, working on oil rigs or in mines. These positions have the possibility of the employees encountering highly traumatic situations on a fairly regular basis. Due to this, there is a heightened need for workplace stress management to help these workers deal with the trauma so that it does not turn into a syndrome such as the post traumatic stress disorder which would require even more counseling and possibly medication to deal with the debilitating symptoms.
In every job there are stressors that occur in a workplace environment which can cause employees who are not able to handle stress as effectively to begin to falter as workers, forgetting important dates or assignments and getting impatient with customers or other employees. In order to counteract these effects, companies are calling for workplace stress management to help teach their employees to handle stress more effectively through seminars and retreats.
Types of Seminars
For high impact industries where there is a good chance that the employee will encounter a traumatic situation, such as ER doctors and nurses, fire fighters, military men in combat zones, and oil rig or mine workers have to deal with, there are specific workplace stress management techniques that will help. One workplace stress management technique is debriefing, which is done in a twenty-four hour to a several day or week period of time in which the employee has a chance to talk about the incident with trained personnel and others who experienced it, and be given specific stress management techniques to use in the future. They are also given professional references should they need further help after the workplace stress management debriefing has occurred.
In a more average workplace, the workplace stress management sessions are usually given by a presenter who comes in and does a one to several hour presentations that addresses the stress relieving needs of that particular organization. Sometimes these seminars will be done at a retreat where the employees are out of their regular workplace setting, often making it easier for them to concentrate and resolve any conflict due to stress related issues.
There are some basic workplace stress management techniques that are simple yet effective in helping a worker manage stress more effectively. One is that when the worker becomes overwhelmed, he should stop, count to ten, and breathe deeply, stretching if possible, which helps to re-oxygenate his body and also give a short mental break, both of which can help relieve stress. Another option is to take a walk outside or down to the bathroom so that he leaves the immediate environment where there is more stress.
