I ran for 20 years in the Army and am a mail carrier who walks 5-6 miles daily. I had a few beers back in Jan 09 and got it, too. I had this procedure done 5 days ago and am going back to work in two days. The pain following the procedure was nothing that ibuprofen couldn't handle. Felt maybe like a sore rib, but I am looking forward to not having to take med the rest of my life. I would recommend it.

I have A-Fib which was brought on by drinking too much alcohol one day and I woke up the next morning to A-Fib and I drove my self to the ER which they the admitted me. They called it holiday heart because they get a lot of people on spring break getting this. They have me on metoprolol keep it from occurring again. But now I have anxiety.

I am glad to see Charles is doing so well. I started with Mitral Valve Stenosis and now also have A-Fib. Several Cardio versions worked for awhile, but now I am on oral medications which seem to have me in check. Hoping I won't need the surgery, but I am glad to have seen the procedure. Feel much better about it.

Exercise is always good, but it (as well as vitamins & high potassium diets) is unlikely to have much effect decreasing AF. In general things that increase the amount of blood in the atria or increase the pressure of the blood in the atria will lead to AF. For many patients we don't really know what causes AF. Nothing really prevents AF. Having said that, general good health measures are important. And maintaining good blood pressure control is probably important also.

@georgedublin1 Not all fast heart beats are dangerous. In fact many times the issue with abnormal heart rhythms isn't the danger they pose but the symptoms that they cause. There are a few circumstances when we are concerned about fast heart rhythms even if they cause no symptoms. If the heart beats too quickly for weeks at a time (not intermittently but constantly) the bottom chambers of the heart can be damaged. This is not a problem for short episodes of fast heart rates.

i have been suffering from this for some time i used to have SVT and got an ablation done for that but i now have AF. i have been on numerous different kinds of beta blockers in order to rectify this at the moment im on sotacor, im surprised that the doctor said that if the heart beats fast for a few hours its not dangerous i thought that all fast heart rates were dangerous

I have had a fib for 20 years and took all difernt kind of meds none would keep me in sinus I am not taking timolol and valum and I have been in sinus for five years I think the valum is the reason why.xanax did not help either my heart changed or the valum 5 two time day helps keep my heart relaxed and controls the a fib along with 30 to 40 mgs of timolol.

Well, no one shocks asystole, though vfib can mimic asystole, asytole is not a shockable rhythm. And you are right--a patient could loose thier pulse for more than 30 seconds due to an unsuccessful cardioversion.

So what are you saying? Staff would not have been medically warranted to use a traditional defibrillator for a patient in AFIB. Your typical defibrillator it is too high a voltage to use on someone who is not in a lethal rhythm (VTACH/VFIB/ASYSTOLE). It may do more harm than good. Your personal experience does not set the medical standard for everyone because clearly, there is an exception to every general rule. But you may want to find out more clearly what exact procedure they did to you.

Persistent atrial fibrillation is a major cause of death. Most clinicians will attempt to achieve sinus rhythm in their patients. Defibrillation is useless towards any atrial arrhythmias, as it only works for a ventricular arrhythmia. There is, however, a lower voltage treatment that can be used to correct AFIB in its early stages, by delivering a series of timed shocks. If the patient has had AFIB for a while tho, the shocks may not be effective.

A difference of a beat or two is negligible... although, it may be the same mechanism at work. The person I took the pulse on had a radial rate of 80bpm (approx.) and was at 150-180bpm on the monitor. Pretty cool! At first, I thought I may have been doing something wrong or feeling every second or third beat. Kinda feel better now after looking up some of the info. Thanks for your input!!!

Hello, You may be right. I just made my heart go into AFIB (deep breaths will do it) & performed an EKG on myself with my handy-dandy "Omron" EKG analyzer. The 30 second strip gave an irregular AFIB pulse of 69 bpm. Then I quickly checked my pulse (still irregular) at the wrist for 1 minute & got 55 bmp. 9 minutes later I did another EKG while in normal rhythm & got EKG = 49 bpm, Wrist = 50 bpm. Also while jogging I have found that the wrist pulse to be too weak, irregular and rapid to count.

Thanks for the reply. I was actually looking for some information today about the Heart Rate felt at the wrist in relation to the monitor rate. This is what I eventually found on Merck: "A pulse deficit (the apical ventricular rate is faster than the rate palpated at the wrist) may be present because left ventricular stroke volume is not always sufficient to produce a peripheral pressure wave at fast ventricular rates."

Hello, There's no reason to think that a high tech EKG in a cardiologist office would give a different heart rate reading than a pulse reading at the wrist. I regularly check my pulse at the wrist & I usually wear a heart rate monitor while jogging. When I'm in a-fib I try to keep my heart rate under 200bpm. Sometimes the heart rate monitor gives inaccurate readings. I'm hardly ever fooled as I stop & make a quick wrist pulse check. I count the beats for 6 seconds and multiply by 10 to get bpm.

That is one fast heart rate. When I'm in a-fib the doctors are surprised that my heart rate is only 65-80 bpm until I tell them that when my heart is in normal rhythm (at rest) my heart rate is in the low 40's. Yea that's right, I jog marathons and triathlons per cardiologists orders.

i get these attacks also. im 33 and i have to avoid alcohol and caffeine even choclate can set off an attack. the last time it happend to me was the week before christmas and i was hospitalized with a heart rate of 170. they slowed it down with an injection of a drug called betalock, however it was several more hours before my heart went back to a normal rhythem..try the ablation op it may work for you.

Thanks doctor. I've had three A.F. attacks over the last 12 months. They just come out of nowhere, and they're REAL scary. I'm on a low dosage of beta blockers at the moment, but I'm nervous all the time, not knowing if and when the next attack may hit. I'm going to talk to my doctor about an ablation.

These videos have been very informative. I've had afib for 4 years and it has a big effect on my quality of life. I am very symptomatic and have daily episodes lasting anywhere form a few minutes to 12-16 hours. It is good to get some no nonsense information weighing both the pros and cons of drug therapy and ablation. I wish that employers,and doctors understood what afib sufferers go through.
