As to the "overbearing father" theme, I'd point to "The Colossus" , which was written 3 years earlier. SP makes a clear reference to "The Colossus" in "Daddy": "Ghastly statue with one gray toe/Big as a Frisco seal . . . I used to pray to recover you." Overall the theme is handled with much more imagination and originality in "The Colossus"; however "Daddy" is by far the more popular poem.

I think the implication is that a foot living in a shoe should be protected, but her father, the "black shoe" is not protecting her but stifling her, "barely daring to breathe..." You're right, that doesn't necessarily imply sexual abuse, only an overbearing father.

The black shoe= condom comment doesn't make sense. She said she lived IN a black shoe. Obviously she is not saying she lived in a condom. Also I don't know what no being able to breath has to do with sexual abuse. More likely its a reference to a suicide attempt.

SP is one of most studied modern poets of all time, both her life & her work. If she had been sexually abused by her father, I am sure that it would have been written about by now. I reread a part of the Journals of Sylvia Plath, and I can now clarify the incident described earlier: SP was forcibly and aggressively kissed by an older man (an amateur artist) when she was 17. She was not sexually assaulted. When the man saw that SP was upset he got her a glass of water and let her leave his room. SP's biggest concern was that she would be embarrassed if a story of the incident got around.
