I bet your friend was a nut case from the get go. And most people become vegetarian and vegan to cure their bodies from the ailments caused by meats, because when you eat meat it weighs on the stomach and you can't eat as many fruits and vegetables. Most meat eaters eat a slice of tomatoe as compared to a vegetarian who eats a whole one and a load of good foods, not just a cheesburger haha.

one b-12 tablet usually offers more than 1000% of the daily value. the companies who sell this stuff are loving the sheep who buy into it. b-12 is a vitamin made from a bacteria in your intestines and will produce on it's own if your in good health, and i didn't have to go to school for 10 years and dump $100,000 into an education to discover that. I had a friend who went vegan for a year. No supplements whatsoever. He went depressed after a while and subsequently had schizophrenia. He was put in a particular community. His mind was in muddled state even in the course of his treatment, which lasted for 4 months.Luckily and thankfully he went fine afterwards. He's still taking b12 tablets everyday, not as pescribed for the mental disorder he incured, but to cure his impaired sense of smell. Which was also induced by the deficiency in b12.

This video is terrible! I'm an evangelist for B12 and I'm disgusted that this video is promoting misunderstood platitudes. B12 is a vitamin - vital for life. It is made by bacteria in the gut (meat eaters get it from cattle & sheep, vegans get it from their own gut), but modern food additives seem to kill a lot of these. Azcentral sorry for the misunderstanding. Aside from that, yes people do benefit from supplimentation, however the underlining cause of all this is not addressed. The medical industry like many other industry are so focused or purposedly focused on symptoms rather than cause. Thus the cycle repeats itself, where in natural medicine, we have the cure to virtually all disease, but the dominant western medicine have always put their thumbs down. More regulation is not the solution.

hyubgaek, I was putting clubtour - not you - in the 71% in the video who choose to believe in...what they believe, regardless of those nasty things called facts. I think you are agreeing with Dr. Hughes (and I agree ) - food is the best source for required nutrients. Having said that, there are people who do benefit from supplimentation; for instance - medical conditions. There should be more regulation to protect those who just don't take the time like you to do the homework.

Yesterday I posted a comment where I wrote that Dr. Hughes didn't come off as someone thoroughly familiar with the field on which she is lecturing, and I related it to information I have in the past received from the Life Extension Foundation which I rate as superb when it comes to succinct as well as comprehensive information on nutrition and dietary supplements. I don't want to be a conspiracy nut but it does seem odd that our own government is so behind, for instance, Canada's in it's recommendations for daily vitamin D3. I also have a real distrust of big pharmaceutical, which can't make money off of something as simple as the sun or an inexpensive supplement. Actually, I feel angry with the sunscreen companies who make sunscreens blocking out beneficial UVB rays..causing them to fluoresce in the carcinogenic UVA spectrum. What the hell is that?!

I agree with you, Joel. And I'm happy when I hear people have faith in something other than drugs/ doctors. But my personal focus is preventing health problems in the first place. What I meant in my comment is that you can master your own PHYSICAL health by simply consuming what nature provides in balanced proportions. If you become ill, sure there are vitamins and such which help restore balance in the body, I do not dispute that. Bottom line, I've found that thinking simply is the 'trick'.

@jdw211 NO, I believe you are totally wrong about Vitamin D! I know for a fact that it has helped me throw off the flu this year in one day! I have been taking 4500 units/day for about a year, and I haven't had a cold since! I am 70! When I felt the flu coming on, I immediately increased my Vit. D to 12000 units/day, for two days, and the symptoms vanished that quickly! This has never happened to me before, that I have been able to throw off the flu like that! I didn't take the flu shot either!

Do you ever see an animal, a tree, or any other living organism besides humans questioning what nature provides? Our Sun is good because it provides. No need for supplements in healthy people. LabCorp is also where I get my testing done. The test itself is called the "25-Hydroxy Vitamin D" test. It measures the amount of active Vitamin D in the blood. At least in my case, I have to specifically add this test to my blood work; Vitamin D levels aren't usually measured unless you or your doctor specifically requested that they be.

There are two types of vitamin D one is natural (D3, or cholecalciferol) and one is synthetic (D2, or ergocalciferol). D3 is the same vitamin your body makes when exposed to sunshine. D2 is made by irradiating yeast with ultraviolet light. Supplementation with D3 is a lot safer and more efficient as D2 is poorly absorbed by the body. So when taking a Vit.D supplement, make sure its D3, not D2.

Unfortunately, most people don't realize that the gov't recommendations are not designed for optimal health; these levels are only the amount that usually prevents obvious disease--there can be a huge difference between RDA & optimal levels. I'm wondering if the statin drugs for lowering cholesterol (another myth--OXIDIZED LDLs are actually the problem) has caused any depression in vitamin D productiiom since sunlight causes the cholesterol in the skin to begin the vitamin D production process.

I've been taking 10,000 IU's in supplement form (2 5,000 IU softgels) every day for the past 3 years and I have not gotten sick once. Not a single cold, flu, etc. I used to fight colds all winter long. I get my levels tested once a year and they're usually around 60 ng/mL, right in the optimal range - The Vitamin D Council recommends maintaining a level between 50-80 ng/mL. It is absolutely preposterous what the RDA/DRV is (for all nutrients) as set by the FDA, the Fraud & Drug Administration.

Vitamin D is no doubt the most important "hormone"/vitamin in addition to a healthy diet in warding off most illnesses. Interesting point he made about Vitamin D versus FLUORIDE (toxic waste). I wish more people were aware of the benefits of Vitamin D. For years my doctor warned me to stay out of the sun and use sunscreen. I fell for it and was sick with flu every year. I know better now... do not use sunscreen and get some sunshine. It's healthy in moderation. Haven't been sick since.
