The estimates range from 1 per 100,000 to 1 in 5 million. Research shows that these "strokes" are already in process and that any strain on the neck can initiate them (even washing your hair in the shower). Results may take several visits depending on the severity of your condition. If you are feeling ABSOLUTELY no improvement after 6 visits then your injuries may also require therapies complimentary to adjustments (massage, or exercise for example). chiropractors are highly trained in preforming these adjustments. A minor increase in discomfort is normal but should dissipate within a few hours. if your pain increases drastically it is likely you just got a bad adjustment. I don't think this has anything to do with the technique the chiropractor uses, as it is more likely that this doctor just isn't taking the proper time to ensure this treatment is appropriate for you at that time.

There may be some minor discomfort...but please make sure you visit a chiropractor who knows what the hell they are doing as far as the neck is concerned (preferably an upper cervical chiropractor). The neck is very delicate and can be easily messed up. Not saying this particular doctor does not know what he is doing, just some advice.

i don't speak very well the English but i will try to explain my case the best i been going to a dr. in chiropractic for 7 sessions and i feel the same as when the first time i lost my cervical curve that ocasionates contractions in my neck and upper back can you tell me how should he procedure in the adjustments because every time i go it only takes like 2 minutes or less.

While this is sometimes the case, I would (personally) not try to force an adjustment. Most often some work on the muscles is required to allow the body to be adjusted. Many a Chiropractor has made a patient worse by forcing things. It may take longer, but its always better to start off gently and progress as the body heals.

Insurance is not necessary, even though thier profits would skyrocket if they covered chiropractic more completely. Most of my patients stand to save money by paying out of pocket. As for access to care - I give my direct cell phone number to all my patients, or many docs have thier office number forwarded directly to them. I have had patients call me at 10:30 at night and at 6:30 in the morning.

Access to care is the key... MDs do provide emergency room service. There patients are not made to wait. Your suggestion of adding a chiropractor to the emergency room is a great idea. As for the 24 hour answering service, how often does a chiropractor check it? Do they check it at Midnight or 3 AM in the morning? Again, when you are in severe pain and it is at night and you can't sleep, it is then that you need the service. Making someone wait until 8 or 9AM the next morning seems lacking.

After I had a really sore back, my back, even after the sore muscles healed, still hurt around the shoulder blade. It popped a lot and always had a slight burning pain. Just one treatment fixed it. He realigned the entire spine and then pushed the ribs back into place. A little soreness the night after the treatment but then no pain or discomfort since! Best $40 ever spent.

bike, again, you make some points, however; how can you guage the efficacy of treament in a newborn? you could measure amount of crying, but i doubt they could work the visual analog pain scale (hahaha). the activator comment makes more sense, but, while i believe in activator protocols, they'd be less easily measured than a diversified/gonstead type adjustment (still, a decent idea). when a chiro school is awarded a $100 million grant by a drug company, i'm sure this study will be done.

@BikeStorck Christopher Reeve is another great example of the power within the human body. He had his cord severed, yet was still able to maintain life. This is because his brain was still alive. However, as the cord was severed, his brain could no longer communicate with the rest of his body. His vascular system still functioned b/c much of vascular control is from cranial nerves and autonomic nervous system, mostly the vagus nerve(X). Very very rare case.

Hello Chiro 2222. Well, I will mention Christopher Reeve again, who had severe nerve damage from a fracture in C1 and C2, and still seemed to have many organs and systems, such as the vascular system, that continued to function fairly well. He unfortunately had infections from a pressure wound, that led to cardiac arrest, which theoretically could have been prevented if he had been in a weightless environment.

Hello Vcovreson. Isn't it possible to give a newbie a fake adjustment? Someone that doesn't even know what an adjustment should feel like? (I am sure there are thousands of people out there) Maybe fake an activator adjustment? How about afterwards running the nervoscope down a subject's back connected to a computer making all kinds of optimistic beeps and announcing in a pleasant tone of voice "There, you're adjusted and everything is fine now" ... This would be the placebo group. :-)

Either the subject or the experimenter or both would know that a bone was in a cast, or that a bone was aligned or immobilized. I try to see the big picture, but sometimes it is necessary to examine the individual trees to see what is damaging the entire forest. Just because I'm that one guy who sticks his nose in..... I've gone to the chiropractors many times. A lot of what they showed in this video is what happens to me. I know what I can do when I walk in, and I know what I can do when I walk out. Chiropracters know what they are doing, because it's done more for me than any medicine.

In order for your body to heal, your brain must send messages via the nervous system in order to initiate your healing mechanisms. If there is interference between the source and the target, no healing will occur. "A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues ? such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons.", according to the Mayo Clinic. That's very interesting, Vcovreson. According to the Mayo Clinic Website: "A number of conditions may cause tissue to compress a nerve or nerves. Injury, poor posture, osteoarthritis, stress from repetitive job, hobby or sports activities, and obesity are common causes of nerve pressure." But you'd think that a slight amount of pressure on a nerve from a muscle or a tendon, would often cure itself with rest, and without any intervention by a chiropractor or even a physiotherapist.

@BikeStorck I see what you're saying, but you are trying to visualize the sacrum the same way you see a vertebra. The individual bones of the sacrum are fused and do not move, but the sacrum as a whole can rotate in nutation or counternutation in relationship to the ilium. This can produce the sacral subluxation via traction. But don't forget that there are many ways subluxations can occur, not just via structural changes.

i have had 3 herniated discs since i was 18. im now 43. i have been told by numerous dr's & surgeons that the only way to take the pain away was surgery. i have a few friends who have had back surgery & are now worse than what they were. i was recommended to dr. priestly of newport beach, ca. and i have to say, after a week & a half i have been virtually pain free. i have to go 3 times a week for 3 months, which i will be glad to do, since he has taken my pain away. with no surgery, no meds!!

I'm shocked too. I can see the improvement in my face and posture.and my voice is getting lower like it used to be. My bite shifted so much too an I no longer grind and have tension toward the molars. I've never heard of Atlas Profilax. Sadly- I wonder if you are not right. I just had my atlas repositioned 2 months ago- with very great improvement in many years of intractable symptoms. I was treated with a technique called Atlas Profilax- and was very happy with the safety of the technique. I'm a student at Logan and believe that philosophy should be reserved for the actual chiropractor to be referenced when you need a reminder of the beginnings of our profession. Actually knowing the neurophysiology behind the adjustment and it's effects does not make me a medipractor, it only makes me a more competent physician.

Today we have sensitive instruments to check to see if there is stress on the nervous system causing abnormal messages to be sent and received. Adjustments are only made IF there is inference; and the goal is to give an adjustment that holds for months to years. what does releasing gas do for a person, I can do that at home, why should I pay someone to crack my back the same way I do it at home. And why do they call it an adjustment, and adjustment means a change. The joint can be popped again in an hour or so, that's no adjustment. People don't call it cracking because they think your breaking bones, they call it that because it makes a cracking sound, but calling it an adjustment makes no sense to me.

You will know the spot because the patient will usually be very tender. Now place the pad of your thumb over the spot and with your hand in a fist shape place P-A force through the tibia. I learned this move from Charette's extremity adjusting seminar. I have since found that using the activator on it is as effective and a bit easier on me. Here is my vague understanding of this adjustment: The adjustment is performed on a posteriorly subluxated tibial plateau. The plateau can be subluxated medially, laterally, or both medially and laterally. The easiest way to determine the subluxation is to position the patient prone, flex the knee to 45 degrees and feel for the sore spot.

Could you explain the knee adjustment at the end of the video? I remember when in chiro school having a patient that had knee pain. One of the staff docs had me do something very similar to the move and I was shaking my head... like, come on... I didn't really do anything. The patient then gets up off the table and says his knee pain is gone. I've done if a few times since, and every patient says it works. The doc told me it was a move from some Russian guy. Please give more info if possible.

Weird to see so many thrusts... when you've got some chiropractors just adjusting atlas (NUCCA). Makes me wonder if every joint you adjusted really needs adjusting. It seems like overkill (just my opinion). It almost looks like your just putting on a show regardless if the adjustments work. And while your adjustments are nice, quick and crisp, I've got to imagine many patients experience or complain about pain from some of these adjustment. Looks professional though. To each his own.

First off, I pay nothing for it, second, it's not mumbo jumbo if it works. I didn't understand it when I went in there. I was skeptical, but thats what my doctor recommended so i went. The chiropractor told me I had scoliosis, and a twisted pelvis. The twisted pelvis was due to my bad ankle, I don't have enough space to explain my ankle here though. Basically, after three or for adjustments, I was walking better, and feeling better. It's common sense if you think about it.

@sebbbo77 This is not true at all. I have exactly the same problem as the patient being treated here and because of that i have gotten whats called Shin Splints. By going to the chiropractor 6 times in 2 months, the strain on my shins has reduced cause of me running differently due to the fact that my back got loosened up. I always have less pain in my back than before after standing for several hours.

I just read up on MS and the early symptoms sounds like what I had after I felt something in my throat shift 3 years ago. No doubt the body can repair the damages as long as the nerves have not died out ... I know I have perm nerve damage at this point, and it is slowly spreading down areas. i will remind people that the procedure of cervical manipulation is not only performed by chiropractors but also performed by some physical therapists(increasing numbers) and osteopathes. regarding "stroke" i would encourage people to research the numerous/various OTC/prescription drugs related to "stroke".there's also plenty of information regarding drug interactions associated with "stroke".

Chiropractic is proven to increase the level of white blood cells circulating in the blood stream, which, common sense dictates, improves immune response. To deny the systemic benefits of chiropractic is absurd. Only about 10% of nerve fibers in our body convey pain. What about the 90% that controls sensation? Heart rhythm? Bronchial dilation? I've found that in my practice, relief of somatovisceral problems happens very quickly (3-6 treatments). We would be naive, of course, to believe that chiropractic can cure everything... afterall, nothing is a panacea.
